`Titanic` actress Gloria Stuart died at the age of 100
The screen star - who portrayed the older version of Kate Winslet`s character Rose Calvert in the movie - died of respiratory failure during her sleep at her Los Angeles home on Sunday night (26.09.10).
Gloria became the oldest actress to ever receive an Oscar nomination for her performance as Rose in James Cameron`s `Titanic` aged 87.
She began her movie career in the 1930s starring in films including `The Old Dark House` and `The Invisible Man`.
Winslet led tributes to Gloria, who revealed she felt "blessed" to have worked with her.
She said: "I am so saddened to hear of the loss of this remarkable woman.
"I feel blessed to have met her, known her and to have acted alongside her. Anyone who spent time in her presence will know what an extraordinary shining light she truly was. She will be deeply missed."
The actress was also one of the founders of the Screen Actors Guild, a trade union for those in her profession.
Gloria was diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago but overcame the disease, something her daughter Sylvia Thompson attributed to her being a "very strong woman".
She said: "She just paid no attention to the illness. She was a very strong woman and had other fish to fry.
"She had a great life. I`m not sad. I`m happy for her."
She was married twice in her life - first to Blair Gordon Newell, which ended in divorce in 1934 and second to screenwriter Arthur Sheekman, who died in 1978.
